The Schecter EvaluSpromatic Shot Stand

Andy very kindly made me up this little stand containing six beefy but tiny shot glasses, with the rims almost touching each other.

It's designed to slide along as a shot pull is taking place - so each glass would get 5 seconds worth (or whatever you want each glass to hold).

Andy is the man!

That was the thing that started all of this off of Andy and Barry taking stabs at making a better beaker set.

I posted in another thread that I use two of the SCAA ones side by side to evaluate shots in five segments - but that I had to jerry-rig a wooden platform for them because sliding the plastic stand the SCAA one comes with gets jammed in the cutouts on the LM Drip tray, when you're moving them left to right.

I originally asked if anyone knew of a source for a five or six mini-beaker stand that held the beakers close together, and Andy, bless him, made one for me, and Barry pm'ed me to say he was making one as well.

La Sanctuaire in Santa Monica had something very similar to this idea. It's five or six glasses point mounted in a marble base. Looked pretty cool and is assuredly expensive as Le Sanctuaire is not Le Target.

On a side note: for those of you interested in seeing the AntiGriddle, PacoJet or Rancilio Silvia in person they have those too.

I've given it a little thought and here's what I'd like to offer people:

1. Go to the Coffee Kids website donation page.
2. Make an "Individual" donation in the "Donate Any Amount Once" box for $35.50 (or more if you wish). You can use Paypal or a charge card.
3. In the comments box, put the word "Schectermatic." Make sure you enter your correct shipping address.
4. If you don't want to make the donation online, send a check for at least $35.50 (made out to Coffee Kids) to Coffee Kids, Attn: Heather, 1305 Luisa St., Suite C, Santa Fe, NM 87505. Put "Schectermatic" in the little note line on the bottom of the check. Make sure you include your correct shipping address.
5. Heather from Coffee Kids will forward the names and shipping addresses to me and I will make and send you an espresso cupping set within two weeks (no further charge to you).
6. It's been suggested that your tax deduction may be reduced by the net value of this set, nominally $25. I don't know for sure, I'm not a tax attorney.

By way of clarification, Coffee Kids keeps your entire donation. There's no "kickback" to me for this.

In the happy instance where I get overwhelmed with requests, I might have to suspend this offer. But meanwhile, please help support Coffee Kids and I hope you enjoy your cupping set.

The set consists of six shot glasses and a heavy plastic block that is bored out to retain the glasses. Not fancy, but very practical and as Mark says, works great!

That would be easy to mill out of wood. Route the sides so they are nice and smooth and cut the shot glass recess with a Forstner bit and put a hand rubbed Deft wax sealant on it. Maybe add a small cork base in the glass recess to prevent vibration, add some insulation and absorb spills. You could stain it with espresso prior to the wax just for fun.

Not milled, but espresso stained. It's only got one application of espresso, so far. I'm going to evap off some of the water to see if I can get a darker tone. I figure a satin polyurethane top coat to keep the wood happy in a wet environment.

Afternoon Barry.

The riser will hold the cups better than what I had thought of, which is a counter sink hole drilled into the base. How are you gluing the top to the base? It would have to be waterproof adhesive.

If you wanted to take it to the next level, use an epoxy finish. It would be a pain with the edges, unless you did each piece prior to gluing them together. It would defiantly be water resistant.

I am going to have to give it a try and see what I come up with. I probably have enough wood in the scrap parts bin to make a dozen.

Don't think you need any glue, just a solid peice of oak w/ a dato reveal??
I have had best results w/ espresso stain pulling 15-18 second shots, apply several coats before sanding too fine as it will penetrate deeper and darker.
Mix a couple of more shots w/ waterbourn varnish as a sanding sealer, sand w/ 400-600 grit wet/dry paper and then finish w/ 2 coats of clear...light sanding between coats.
