I am preparing to host another Alternative Brewing Methods class here at Dilworth, and was researching some different methods for Aeropress, my #1 or #2 favorite method, depending on the coffee. The way I have traditionally used it, is the way described in the book that comes with it. Originally it was because I didn't have the time to experiment, but then I realized, I like that way. I grind it the first espresso setting on a Bunn bulk grinder, use two scoops, fill to the 2, stir, then plunge. Then, I finish with about 6-8 ounces of hot water, like an Americano. I prefer this taste. Everyone I've ever made it for, fell in love with the Aeropress from this method.
But, I could be wrong, there could be other, better methods, and I am never afraid to learn, so I checked out the methods from the three finalists from the World Aeropress Championship this past year. (http://timwendelboe.no/2009/06/top-3-aeropress-methods/) I tried them today with our Ethiopian Sidamo, and have to say I wasn't impressed with either of the first two I tried. I know that they used a Bolivia, which I think is a milder coffee, and maybe their brewing parameters were for that coffee specifically.
I also tried Mark Prince's method, and didn't have as much luck with that one either. I wondered if any of you had had better luck with any of the other methods for brewing with Aeropress. I really do love brewing with it the traditional way, but don't want to miss something better.
